How to Create a Social Media Content Calendar (Free Template Inside)

The number one reason businesses struggle with social media consistency is the lack of a content calendar. When you don't have a plan, every post becomes a stressful, last-minute scramble.
The Two-Hour Monthly Planning System
Step 1: Identify Your Content Pillars (15 mins)
Choose 4-5 themes you'll rotate through. For example: tips and education, behind-the-scenes, client results, personal stories, and promotional content.
Step 2: Map Out Key Dates (15 mins)
Note any holidays, industry events, product launches, or seasonal trends that month. These are easy content opportunities.
Step 3: Batch Your Ideas (30 mins)
Write one-line ideas for each posting day. Don't overthink it - just get concepts down. You'll flesh them out when you create the content.
Step 4: Assign Content Types (15 mins)
Decide which posts will be carousels, Reels, single images, or text posts. Variety keeps your feed interesting and tests what resonates.
Step 5: Create and Schedule (45 mins)
With your plan in place, batch-create your content and schedule it using a tool like Later, Buffer, or Meta Business Suite.
The Template
We've created a free content calendar template that includes all five steps plus a tracking sheet for engagement metrics. Download it from our free resources page.
